Dr. Bertha Maxwell Roddey served as the 20th National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated as well as the President of the Charlotte (NC) Alumnae Chapter. She was extensively involved in establishing the Iota Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Saturday December 2, 1972. Her work on the Charlotte campus did not stop there. Dr. Bertha Maxwell Roddey taught and started the Africana Studies Department. She also served as the first Director of the department. As a symbol of appreciation, the Maxwell-Roddey Distingushed Africana Lecture is given every year by the department.

This scholarship is given in her honor to celebrate her continuous efforts toward public service. Dr. Maxwell Roddey encouraged participation in unique community service projects not only within Delta Sigma Theta, but also throughout the entire Charlotte community. She is well known for her involvement and dedication to partnering with Habitat for Humanity and various other organizations geared to help those in need. Iota Rho’s annual Dr. Bertha Maxwell Roddey Scholarship, in the amount of $500.00, is given to a qualified non-Greek female, attending UNC Charlotte, that exemplifies a commitment to the attributes that Dr. Bertha Maxwell Roddey instilled in all her students: Academic Scholarship, Community Service and Campus Involvement.
